Vice President Al Gore lost the 2000 election to Texas Governor George W. Bush after a 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court decision on December 12 awarded Florida's 25 electoral votes to Gov. Bush. Gore won the total popular vote by .5 percent but lost the election, making him the first candidate to do so since 1888. He conceded the election on December 13 in Washington, DC.
