Numerous leaders and journalists from public media met today in Washington to discuss the future of journalism and public media.
Threats to government funding of public media, including NPR, have caused a broader discussion on the role of publicly funded news, information and culture. This forum looked at how public media needs to change and what role it should have in the future media landscape.
The event, titled "The 2011 Curtis B. Hurley Symposium - The Future of Public Broadcasting: Innovating to Connect Communities," took place at the National Press Club. Speakers included, Jim Lehrer, Anchor of PBS NewsHour; Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS; and Joyce Slocum, Interim President and CEO of NPR.
