American Artifacts: Charleston Civil War Photographs

Washington, DC
Sunday, June 12, 2011

In April 1865, U.S. government photographers documented the flag raising ceremony at Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina after it was recaptured by Union forces. The photographers also recorded scenes of a city badly damaged by war and fire. Charleston native and commercial photographer Rick Rhodes restored and enhanced digital copies of these images, which he acquired from the Library of Congress website. He shows  American History TV a selection of these photographs and describes his project.
