American Artifacts: St. John's Church - Richard Grimmett, Historian

Washington, DC
Sunday, January 1, 2012

St. John's Church on Lafayette Square near the White House was built in 1816 and designed by U.S. Capitol architect Benjamin Latrobe. St. John's is known as the "Church of the Presidents," because every president since James Madison has attended at least one service there.

Historian and church member Richard Grimmett gave American History TV a tour of the national historic landmark, including a rare look inside the President s Pew Prayer Book, signed by many U.S. presidents.
