BP to Pay $4.5 Billion in Settlement with Government Over Oil Spill

BP announced Thursday that it had reached a settlement agreement with the federal government over the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that resulted from the explosion of exploration rig "Deepwater Horizon" in April, 2010.

Attorney General Eric Holder, Acting Associate Attorney General Tony West, Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division Lanny A. Breuer, Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division John Buretta, Director of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissions’ (SEC) Enforcement Division Robert Khuzami and other law enforcement officials held a news conference to discuss the settlement and new criminal charges.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) and  Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA)  also spoke to the press about the settlement.
