British Prime Minister Makes Official Visit to White House

British Prime Minister David Cameron is in the United States for an official visit this week. After meeting with the President earlier in the day, the Prime Minister and his wife attended a dinner at the White House Wednesday.

The official visit began with an arrival ceremony Wednesday. The official event featured a presentation of troops and remarks from both the president and prime minister.

Following the ceremony, the President and Prime Minister held bilateral meetings on a wide range of issues, including the upcoming NATO and G-8 summits.

After meeting together in the Oval Office, the two leaders held a joint press conference in the White House Rose Garden. 

"Our alliance is not one of convenience but rather a matter of conviction," stated P.M. Cameron during his opening remarks. He continued by stating Britain's insurance that they will help insure that Afghanistan is capable for its own security. "We will not give up on this mission," said the Prime Minister, "it must not be a safe haven for terrorists."

The president and first lady will welcome Prime Minister Cameron and his wife to the White House for a state dinner in the evening. 

On Tuesday, the prime minister and the president traveled to Dayton, Ohio, to attend the opening game of the NCAA Men's Basketball championship. First Lady Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron participated in a dinner preview with DC-area school children and girls from a secondary school in London that the First Lady visited during her first official international trip there.

The President attended a state dinner hosted by the Queen during his trip to London in May of last year.  President George W. Bush held a state dinner for the Queen during her visit to the United States in 2007.
