To reduce the prevalence of school age bullying, teachers, school counselors, and other members of the education community gathered at Columbia University for a summit titled "Beyond Bullying."
According to the event organizers, the summit aims to "encourage school administrators and teachers to move from focusing on just ending bullying to impacting child development through emotional and social learning."
The first panel discussion features Kirk Smalley, whose son Ty committed suicide after being suspended for retaliating against a bully that harassed him for two years.
The second panelists present research evidence that social and emotional learning works. Both show evidence that when emotional and social learning is implemented standardized test scores rise. They also called on teachers and school administrators to not think narrowly when addressing bullying.
Columbia University Institute for Urban & Minority Education hosted the summit.
