Aung San Suu Kyi Receives Congressional Gold Medal

Nobel Laureate and Burmese Opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi received the Congressional Gold Medal for her commitment to democracy, peace and human rights on Wednesday. The medal is Congress’ highest honor. 

Suu Kyi is on a 17-day U.S. tour and met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the State Department on Tuesday.

In 1991, she was under house arrest when awarded the Nobel Peace prize. She accepted the award in person June 16, 2012 in Oslo, Norway.

Participants in the ceremony include: Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush.
