CATO University Seminar Examines Economic Growth and Public Policy

Washington, DC
Monday, July 30, 2012

The Cato Institute begins its annual Cato University seminar, held this week in Washington, D.C. Speakers examine economic growth, the origins of state and government, as well as public policy.

University of Rochester Professor of Economics Steve Landsburg, a mathematician and economist, speaks on economic growth and the revolution in human life over the past 200 years. He details how that makes our lives different from those of past generations.

Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute and the Director of Cato University Tom Palmer provides a two-part lecture on the origins of government and the struggle to limit the power of governments through constitutions.

Finally, National Association of Foreign Trade Zones (NAFTZ) President  Daniel Griswold, a policy analyst and former journalist,  discusses how intentions, institutions, and incentives intersect to create public policy.  He also reviews ways that public policy can go well, and the ways that it can go wrong. NAFTZ promotes economic development through trade.
