CSIS Examines China's New President & Leadership Team

Washington, DC
Tuesday, December 4, 2012

On November 15, China underwent a change in leadership as Vice President Xi Jinping became the new General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, succeeding outgoing President Hu Jintao. In addition, Xi Jinping assumed the position of Chairman of the Central Military Commission. In March 2013, he will also become China's new president.

Also elected during the 18th Communist Party Congress were members of the party's politburo and the Politburo Standing Committee, which governs the party.

On Tuesday, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) examined Xi Jinping's leadership style, the members of his new governing team and what lies ahead for U.S.-China relations.

Panel participants included: Christopher K. Johnson, Senior Advisor and Freeman Chair in China Studies, CSIS; Kurt Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific; and Richard McGregor Washington Bureau Chief, Financial Times.

Bob Schieffer, anchor of CBS News' "Face the Nation," moderated the discussion.
