Center for National Policy Discusses Impact of Egypt's Presidential Elections

Washington, DC
Tuesday, May 29, 2012

The top two vote getters in Egypt’s presidential election will face each other in a runoff election next month (June 16-17). The candidates are the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi & a former prime minister to Hosni Mubarak, Ahmed Shafiq. The Center for National Policy reviewed the elections and what it means for Egypt’s future.

The panel, which included a former Egyptian diplomat and a Egyptian newspaper reporter, talked about the country’s economy and unemployment, as well as the yet to be written constitution.

The panel discussion focused on the election, including: whether the Egyptian people will consider the first round results fair; what the outcome says about Egyptian society; who will win in the second round; and how each candidate, if elected, will deal with domestic issues in Egypt and foreign policy issues, such as U.S. relations.

Panelists included: Karim Haggag, visiting faculty at the National Defense University and career Egyptian diplomat; Thomas Gorguissian, Washington correspondent at the Al Tahrir-The Egyptian Daily; and Mohamed Alaa Abdel-Moneim, professorial lecturer at American University.
