Commander of ISAF Troops in Afghanistan Briefs Press

Washington, DC
Monday, March 26, 2012

General John Allen, Commander of the International Security Forces in Afghanistan, briefed the press following a week in Washington on Monday morning.

Gen. Allen talked about troop levels in Afghanistan, recent reports of violence and the progress of Afghan security forces.

The General testified before both the House and Senate last week, following events in Afghanistan over the past few months that have increased tensions there.

In mid-February, it was discovered that U.S. soldiers had burned copies of the Koran that were seized from prisoners because they had writing in them.  Earlier this month, a U.S. soldier allegedly killed 17 civilians, including women and children.  The soldier, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, was charged Friday with 17 counts of murder.  He is being held at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Gen. Allen did not discuss this case in detail due to the pending investigation.
