Conversation with Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan

Richmond, VA
Thursday, September 20, 2012

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan traveled to the University of Richmond and addressed an audience of law students during a conversation with Law School Dean Wendy Perdue.

Justice Kagan talked about why she became a lawyer, her recent oral argument and conference experiences, and how she approaches opinion writing.

According to previous statements, Justice Kagan deliberately stayed away from legal strategy meetings on health care reform in early 2010 —a critical decision as solicitor general that allowed her to participate in the health care ruling when she joined the Supreme Court later that year.

Following her conversation with Dean Perdue, Justice Kagan answered audience questions.
