DOJ's Inspector General Testifies on "Fast and Furious" Report

Washington, DC
Thursday, September 20, 2012

Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified Thursday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about his agency's report, released Wednesday, that details an ATF operation known as "Fast and Furious."

The 471-page report comes after an 18-month investigation, and recommends more than a dozen agency officials receive administrative or disciplinary action. DOJ Attorney General Eric Holder said he will not take any corrective action in his agency in response to the failed operation until his agency has reviewed the report.

Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and his Committee have been investigating the use of gun walking, where weapons are allowed to be smuggled across the Mexican border with the goal of arresting cartel members later.  Chairman Issa has called several hearings this year though today's meeting was postponed twice.

In June, Rep. Issa threatened to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress because he believes the Justice Department has moved slowly in response to the committee's subpoenas. At that time, the Justice Department has said they could not disclose the thousands of supporting documents the committee has requested because it would interfere with the Agency's ongoing investigations.
