There are 33 Senate races this year. The political balance in the upper chamber today is 51 Democrats, 47 Republicans and 2 Independents.
Democrats in 15 of the 21 Democratic-held seats up this year are running again; and six are retiring. Republicans in 7 of the 10 Republican-held seats up this year are running; and 3 are retiring. Independents hold two seats and both are up this year – One (Bernie Sanders) is running, and one (Lieberman) is retiring.
