Democrats Increase Margin in Senate

Washington, DC
Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Democrats expanded their majority in the Senate on Tuesday, finishing the night with 53 Democrats and 2 independents, who are expected to caucus with them. Their majority in the next congress will be 55-45. Currently with two independents caucusing with Democrats the margin is 53-47. There were 33 Senate seats up for election this year and the only incumbent to lose was Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) who lost to Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

Republicans won three open-seat races, including one pick-up in Nebraska where Deb Fischer won the seat vacated by Retiring Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE). Democrats took the open seat in Connecticut, vacated by Independent Senator Joe Lieberman.

Joe Donnelly (D) will replace Sen. Dick Lugar (R-IN), who lost his re-election bid in the primary to a challenger from the right.

In Maine, Independent Angus King, who will likely caucus with the Democrats, won the seat formerly held by Republican Olympia Snowe.

Watch victory and concession speeches from some of the contested races.
