Experts Discuss Current State of the Mission in Afghanistan

Washington, DC
Tuesday, July 3, 2012

The Brookings Institute hosted a discussion on the current situation Afghanistan, as the mission in that country continues to move toward a transition of control to the Afghan government.

Alex Thier, assistant to the administrator and director of the Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs at the U.S. Agency for International Development, made the keynote speech.

Following his remarks, Thier joined former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ronald Neumann and Brookings Director of Research and Senior Fellow Michael O'Hanlon for discussion.

This discussion comes just before a major donors’ conference to be held in Japan on July 8. Donor countries will discuss Afghanistan’s development and governance and consider future international financial support. They are expected to ask Afghanistan to increase safeguards against corruption.
