The American Enterprise Institute hosted a discussion on what the 2012 election results will mean for federal education policy.
Experts from both parties discussed what the Obama administration's education priorities will be in the second term, the prospects for the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Higher Education Act, how sequestration would affect education, as well as public opinion on issues like charter schools, teacher evaluation, education spending.
"Much of the education reform and change will not come from the federal government but will happen in the state level," Education Policy Adviser to House Speaker John Boehner said at an event. In remarks, Katherine Haley said the biggest surprise of the 2012 election for Republicans was the turnout in the Senate.
