Experts Discuss Potential Political Transition in Venezuela

The Council of the Americas hosted a roundtable discussion on the Venezuela's choices as it faces a potential political transition.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is battling cancer and currently recovering from surgery in Cuba. Nicolas Maduro, who was named Vice President in October, is seen as a potential successor. 

Experts on the country discussed the uncertainty created by the potential transition, the prospects for change, the implications for Venezuela’s economy and how the U.S. and other countries will respond.

Participants included: Charles Shapiro, president of the Institute of the Americas and former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela; Russell Dallen, president and editor-in-chief of the Latin American Herald Tribune in Caracas; Christopher Sabatini, editor-in-chief of the Americas Quarterly and senior director of Policy at the Council of the Americas; and Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the Council of the Americas.
