Experts Discuss Preventing Global Pandemics

In October, The New York Academy of Sciences hosted a discussion on emerging infectious diseases and preventing global pandemics.

Panelists talked about the origin of viruses, and listed deforestation, international travel and the growth of “megacities” as several reasons for the rapid spread of disease and viruses. Following their remarks, they took questions from the audience.

Montana nature and travel writer for David Quammen, whose work has apperared in National Geographic, Outside, Harper's, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Book Review and Outside magazine, moderated the discussion.

Panelists included: Daniel B. Jernigan, CDC Influenza Division deputy director and  captain in the U.S. Public Health Service; W. Ian Lipkin, Columbia University Epidemiology professor and director of the Center for Infection and Immunity; and Maryn McKenna, journalist in public health and food policy and blogger for Wired.
