Experts Discuss U.S. Intervention in Syria

Washington, DC
Monday, July 23, 2012

The Middle East Policy Council hosted a discussion on the ongoing violence in Syria, where reports have said that the opposition is gaining ground.

The event featured speakers who think the U.S. should get involved, and others who oppose U.S. intervention. Speakers included: Syrian National Council Spokesperson Radwan Ziadeh, George Mason University Professor Mark N. Katz, Middle East Initiatives Senior Adviser Steven Heydemann and Political Analyst Leon Hadar.

Over 17,000 Syrians have died since the start of protests against the government.

The Syrian foreign says the country has chemical weapons that it would use in case of a foreign intervention.

Last week, Russia and China blocked yet another U.N. sanction vote, and several of Bashar al-Assad's security officials were killed in a bombing.

Middle East Policy Council Executive Director Thomas R. Mattair moderated the discussion.
