FCC Chair Defends FY2013 Budget in House Appropriations Hearing

Washington, DC
Monday, March 19, 2012

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government held a hearing on the proposed FY2013 Budget for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and FCC Commissioner Robert M. McDowell testified.

They spoke about expanding access to the internet in rural areas, making broadband space available for the increasing use of mobile devices, the FCC’s role in tracking campaign ad spending and gave an update on spectrum sale and allocation.

The $346.78 million request includes funding to continue efforts to accelerate broadband deployment throughout the nation, to implement FCC reforms to the Universal Service Fund programs and to improve the FCC’s information technology infrastructure and security.

The FCC pays for its operations with user fees that it collects.
