FTC Chairman Testifies on Best Practices for Consumer Privacy

Washington, DC
Wednesday, May 9, 2012

Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, will join commissioner Maureen Ohlhausen and Cameron Kerry, general counsel at the Department of Commerce to testify in a hearing on the FTC's recent report: "Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change."

The hearing, held by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, focuses on recommendations made by the FTC and the Obama Administration to provide consumers with basic privacy protection through legislation. The Obama Administration has issued a "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights," as part of this effort to improve privacy protection.

The chairman of the committee, Sen. Nelson Rockefeller (D-WV), announced the hearing, saying "consumers are often unable to protect their privacy in a digital environment in which their personal information is increasingly collected and monetized for commercial purposes."
