Fiscal Summit Showcases Political Leaders

Washington, DC
Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The Peter G. Peterson Foundation (PGPF) holds its third annual "2012 Fiscal Summit: America's Case for Action." Senior officials, policy-makers and elected leaders meet for a bipartisan and day-long discussion on America’s fiscal challenges.

Earlier in the day, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he hopes Congress can do so without the drama and pain they caused the country the last Summer.  In the following session, former President Bill Clinton said that President Obama should spend more time talking to the American people about his budget proposals to launch a national dialogue about the crucial issues.

Then, a panel of lawmakers talked about about the state of Congress.  Participants included Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), ranking member of the House Budget Committee Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA).

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos moderates the next session with leading policymakers, elected leaders, businessmen and scholars about the importance of addressing the nation’s fiscal challenge.  Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY)  as well as the Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter join the discussion.

Lastly, CNN's Erin Burnett interviews Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH).

The Peter Peterson Foundation hosts the event. Peter Peterson served as Commerce Secretary in the Nixon Administration and was also the Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
