Former News of the World Editor Testifies to British Inquiry

London, England
Friday, May 11, 2012

Rebekah Brooks, former News International Chief Executive, testified Friday before the Leveson Inquiry to answer questions on her relationships with politicians.

She answered panelists' questions on her knowledge of phone hacking practices and allegations of corruption at the now defunct British tabloid, News of the World -- where she also served as editor from 2000-2003.  News of the World is at the center of the phone hacking scandal.

Last year, Rebekah Brooks, along with James and Rupert Murdoch, testified before a British parliamentary committee investigating alleged phone hacking practices at News of the World. She was arrested last July on suspicion of conspiracy and corruption and arrested again in March 2012 on “suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice."

On Thursday, former News of the World editor and Cameron administration official Andy Coulson testified about his relationship with politicians and past position with the News Of the World.  He also elaborated on his relationship with Rebekah Brooks and her influence in the company.

British Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Lord Justice Leveson to oversee a committee examining the relationship between the press and celebrities, politicians and the police.  More than 250 witnesses have testified before the inquiry, including “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, actor Hugh Grant, and James & Rupert Murdoch.
