Grover Norquist Discusses Role of 2012 Election in Tax Policy

Washington, DC
Monday, November 19, 2012

Grover Norquist, the Americans for Tax Reform President and author of the so-called "Taxpayer Protection Pledge," discussed the upcoming tax bills in Congress and the meetings that Congressional Leaders held with President Obama last week.

The "Taxpayer Protection Pledge," signed by the vast majority of Republicans in Congress, requires lawmakers to pledge to never raise taxes. Many analysts cite this pledge as a key sticking point in ongoing negotiations over the national debt.

On Friday, Democratic and Republican leaders from the House and Senate met with President Obama at the White House and emerged from the meeting to tell reporters that revenue increases were now on the table. Prior to this meeting, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) had insisted that no budget including tax increases would pass the House. The President had insisted on these revenue increases as part of an overall bill that reduced spending and helped to balance the budget.

The Center for National Interest hosts this discussion.
