The House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources held a hearing on "The Impact of Welfare and Tax Benefits on Work."
As Congress prepares to revamp the federal tax code, the hearing examined whether certain tax credit programs discourage people receiving government assistance from looking for work.
So-called "phase-out-rules" may impose high tax penalties on people who find work while they receive assistance from multiple programs such as food stamps, housing, day care and other supplemental income programs.
The hearing was co-chaired by Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY) and Select Revenue Measures Subcmte. Chair Pat Tiberi (R-OH).
