House Cmte. Examines Government Spending

Washington, DC
Tuesday, February 5, 2013

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a hearing titled, "Government Spending: How Can We Best Address the Billions of Dollars Wasted Every Year."

A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report showed that the federal government had a $1.1 trillion deficit for the fiscal year 2012 and stated that “the current structure of the federal budget is unsustainable.”

Witnesses from non-governmental organizations testified about the issues that contribute to wasteful or inefficient government spending.

They included: Thomas A. Schatz, president of Citizens Against Government Waste; Ryan Alexander, president of Taxpayers for Common Sense; Dan Blair, president of the National Academy of Public Administration and Jonathan Kamensky, senior fellow at the IBM Center for the Business of Government.

Rep. Darrell E. Issa (R-CA) chaired the hearing.
