The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Management examined the Department of Homeland Security's ability to oversee the domestic use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones.
The Subcommittee looked at the increasing use of drones domestically and how they impact people’s privacy. Drones have been used by police departments, colleges and some federal agencies.
In its 2012 reauthorization, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was directed by Congress to safely open domestic airspace to wider use of drones by 2015.
The FAA is expected to release a proposed rule later this year, which would establish policies, procedures and standards for the unmanned aircrafts.
