House GOP Elects Leaders for Next Congress

Washington, DC
Wednesday, November 14, 2012

The House Republican Caucus met Wednesday to elect leadership positions for the next Congress, which starts in January.

Speaker Boehner opened the news conference by reiterating his statement that the re-election of a House majority provides the only defense for the American people against the Democrats' policies.

The Speaker said that the Senate should move on the House bill on tax cuts, and that he was not planning to pass the Senate version.

Many of the leadership positions will remain the same, including Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and House Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

The main toss-up race was between Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-WA) for Republican Conference Chair, the third-ranking House Republican. Rep. McMorris-Rodgers won that election.

According to The Hill, "the conference chairman is a top messaging post for Republicans," directing the broadcast studios for television and radio, and extending into social media and online messaging.
