House Rules Committee Debates Additional Sandy Aid

Washington, DC
Monday, January 14, 2013

The House Rules Committee debated the rules for an additional aid package for those affected by Hurricane Sandy in October. The total amount of recovery funds amount to $50.7 billion. The full House is expected to debate the package tomorrow.

HR 152, the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, includes $17 billion for immediate recovery needs, with an amendment adding $33.7 more for longer-term projects, mirroring a previously Senate-passed bill for $60+ billion that expired at the end of the 112th Congress.

The Rules Committee also approved another 13 amendments, one of which requires spending offsets and others which strike efforts not directly related to Hurricane Sandy recovery.

Earlier this month, Congress passed and the President signed a bill providing almost $10 billion to help fund the Federal Flood Insurance Program, which was in danger of running out of money to fulfill claims brought by victims of the storm.
