House Subcmte. Looks at Health Problems for F-22 Pilots

Washington, DC
Thursday, September 13, 2012

House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces holds a hearing on oxygen deprivation issues for pilots flying the Air Force supersonic F-22 Raptor aircraft.

Some F-22 pilots have reported feeling dizzy or disoriented during flight, in addition to experiencing respiratory and neurological problems.

An Air Force study that began in 2011 recently determined that the cause of the problems is the supply of oxygen delivered to the pilots. In April, Air Combat Command requested an independent review team from NASA to review the Air Force's conclusions and their review supported the Air Force's findings.

The leader of that review team, NASA Engineering and Safety Center Principal Engineer Clinton Cragg, testifies at the hearing, along with leaders of the Air Force studies, Retired Air Force Gen. Gregory Martin and Air Force Maj. Gen. Charles Lyon.

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) chairs the hearing.
