Ahead of the nation's tax deadline, IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman addressed the National Press Club Thursday afternoon in a speech entitled "Looking Back and Looking Forward for the Nation's Tax System."
Today Shulman said that he predicts disaster for the tax system if Congress waits until next January to address a host of expiring tax provisions.
He spoke about the agency’s modernization efforts and improved customer service record.
Shulman is serving his final year of a five year term and said today that he does not plan to seek a second term.
This year, the IRS announced the expansion of its “Fresh Start” initiative targeted at helping taxpayers facing economic hardship by providing more installment agreements and new penalty relief to those who are unemployed.
“We have an obligation to work with taxpayers who are struggling to make ends meet," Shulman said in February, according to the press release.
