ISAF Deputy Commander Briefing on Afghan Transition

Washington, DC
Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Lt. Gen. Adrian Bradshaw of the British Army spoke to the press via teleconference from Afghanistan on the progress that ISAF forces are making in transitioning security to the Afghan forces.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that two Americans were killed in a gunfight that was initiated by an Afghan soldier at an Afghan-led checkpoint. The incident escalated with multiple attackers from multiple positions around the checkpoint. One American soldier and an American contractor were killed.

The Americans had just resumed joint patrols with their Afghan counterparts after a temporary halt was ordered due to incidents of so-called "green-on-blue" violence. According to the Washington Post story, American military officials have determined that roughly a quarter of these incidents were caused by insurgents, while many of the others were due to "personal disputes."
