Internet Service Providers (ISP) testified about about securing their communications networks from cyber threats. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) chaired the hearing of the House Energy Subcmte. on Communications and Technology.
Earlier in the month, Chairman Walden appointed a bi-partisan working group, made up of three Democrats and three Republicans, to study "legal impediments" to securing private computer networks against cyberattacks.
Reps. Lee Terry (R-NE) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) head the working group. Other members include: Doris Matsui (D-CA), Bob Latta (R-OH), Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL).
The hearing focused on what ISPs are doing to address cybersecurity, statutory or regulatory obstacles hampering their efforts, how we can encourage public-private partnerships and how we can facilitate information sharing among private industry and between the private and public sectors.
Witnesses on the ISP panel included Edward Amoroso, chief security officer at AT&T Services Inc.; David Mahon, chief security officer of Century Link in Monroe, La.; Jason Livingood, vice president of internet systems engineering at Comcast Corp. in Philadelphia, Pa.; and John Olsen, senior vice president and chief information officer of MetroPCS Communications Inc. in Richardson, Texas.
