Lawmakers Consider Extending the Service of FBI Director Mueller

FBI Director Robert Mueller

Washington, DC
Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Senators on both sides of the aisle today expressed support for extending the term of FBI Director Robert Mueller for two years. Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Charles Grassley however, detailed his concerns with the proposal.

Mueller became FBI Director on September 4, 2001. In May, President Obama announced he is seeking a two-year extension for the 10-year term of Mueller, which expires on September 4.

In the wake of numerous scandals at the agency, Congress passed a law in 1976 limiting the FBI Director to one term.

This hearing also includes testimony from two college professors who discuss the constitutionality of extending Director Mueller’s term.
