Middle East Institute Hosts Discussion on Iraqi Oil and Politics

Washington, DC
Thursday, August 16, 2012

The Middle East Institute hosts analysts and academics in a discussion on the future of Iraq and the politics of the oil industry in that country.

Last week, it was announced that Iraq had produced more than 3 million barrels of oil per day, surpassing its neighbor Iran in oil production for the first time since the end of the Iraqi war. Security problems have plagued the industry in recent years and will play a large role in the country's future production goals.

Participants include Naufel Al-Hassan, commercial councilor at the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq; Raad Al Kadiri, head of the Markets and Country Strategies Group at PFC Energy; Denise Natali, Minerva Chair at the Institute for National Strategic Studies at National Defense University; and Allen Keiswetter, scholar at MEI.
