Pres. Obama and Congressional Leaders Reach Budget Deal

New CR keeps Gov't running until next Friday

Washington, DC
Friday, April 8, 2011

This afternoon, President Obama has signed into law a six day budget agreement that Congress approved earlier this morning.

Late Friday night at the eleventh hour, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that negotiators reached an agreement to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year.

In order to finalize the language and write the bill, congress passed another short term Continuing Resolution (CR)  which will fund the government until April 15th and cuts an additional $2 billion in spending. It also includes an additional $38.5 billion in spending cuts for the rest of the fiscal year which ends September 30th.

This agreement kept the government from shutting down, as well as keeping federal employees from having to take furlough days. It also kept government buildings, museums and National Parks from closing.

Negotiators continue to meet on the bill language. The House hopes to file the bill online late Monday so members and the public can read the text of the legislation. According to a release from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), the House may debate and vote on the bill on Wednesday.

The Government has been operating on continuing resolutions since the fiscal year began last October.
