Mitt Romney Unveils Jobs Plan

President Obama speaks to joint session on Thursday

North Las Vegas, NV
Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney today unveiled his proposals to create jobs if elected.

Saying his plan is not a "single silver bullet," he revealed that it contained 59 specific proposals, including restructuring the tax code, granting waivers to states so they don't have to implement the Affordable Care Act, and cutting discretionary spending by 5%. In addition, he writes in the plan about his approach to "pare back (government) regulation" and open trade agreements with other countries.

His speech comes two days before President Obama is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress on his proposals to stimulate the economy and lower unemployment.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, made the speech at McCandless International Trucks Company in North Las Vegas, Nevada.  The state has the nation's highest unemployment rate, hovering near 13% in July.

Some of the other Republican presidential candidates have come forward recently with their proposals on jobs and the economy.

Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman unveiled his plan in New Hampshire last week. Among his proposals: eliminating capital gains taxes and the Alternative Minimum Tax and lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent.  The plan also lowers personal income tax rates and eliminates the mortgage interest deduction and the child tax credit.

And former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer chose the Chinese Embassy in Washington as the place to release his plan for jobs.   His campaign is calling for "an end to the practice of exporting American jobs overseas, particularly to China (and to) level the playing field so that U.S. small businesses can compete."

House Speaker John Boehner is also scheduled to give a speech on jobs next week.
