On August 21st, 1858 U.S. Senator Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln engaged in the first of seven debates for Douglas’ Senate seat. Douglas won the senate race but two years later Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election. The National Archives hosted a discussion on the Lincoln – Douglas debates.
