Political Communications Experts on 2012 Debates

Washington, DC
Monday, October 1, 2012

A panel of journalists and political communication specialists offer suggestions on how to analyze the 2012 Presidential and Vice Presidential debates, beyond the basic horse race.

The National Communication Association hosted the discussion, which focused on questions beyond "who won?" and seeks to give average viewers a guide for deeper analysis.

Panelists include Annie Groer, a Washington Post contributor, and a DC-based political reporter for the Orlando Sentinel; J. Michael Hogan, Liberal Arts Research Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University; Charlton McIlwain, Associate Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University; Kathryn Olson, Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and Journalist Sander Vanocur, the only surviving participant of the first televised presidential debate held in 1960.
