President Carter's Energy Crisis "Malaise" Speech

Washington, DC
Saturday, May 14, 2011

In July 1979, President Jimmy Carter addressed the nation about the energy crisis and the mood of America. He expressed concern that American democracy was threatened by a “crisis of confidence” in which cynicism toward government had eroded faith in the American way of life.

Though he never used the word, this address has become known as President Carter’s “malaise” speech.
