President Obama Declares Fort Monroe a National Monument

Washington, DC
Tuesday, November 1, 2011

President Obama signed a proclamation in the Oval Office declaring Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia a National Monument.

Fort Monroe was the first site for slave ship landings in the New World, and also served as a refuge for slaves fleeing the southern states during the Civil War.

Following the ceremony, the President offered his condolences to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the entire Clinton family for the death of Secretary Clinton's mother, Dorothy Rodham.
