Pres. Obama and VP Biden Formally Sworn In for a Second Term

Washington, DC
Sunday, January 20, 2013

On Sunday, Pres. Obama was formally sworn in for a second term in office by Chief Justice John Roberts in a private ceremony at the White House. VP Biden took his oath of office, administered by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, at the Vice President’s residence.

By law, the President must be sworn in by noon on January 20th. When the 20th falls on a Sunday, as it does this year, the President takes the oath privately and then again in a public ceremony the following Monday. The President and Vice President also visited the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath.
