President of Yemen Speaks at the Wilson Center

Washington, DC
Friday, September 28, 2012

Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi, President of the Republic of Yemen, participates in a discussion at the Wilson Center on Friday in Washington, D.C.

Almost a year after the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-sponsored agreement was signed that paved the way for a democratic transition in Yemen, the relatively peaceful transition in Yemen gives reason for optimism.

Since Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi assumed the presidency in February 2012, he has worked to restructure the military, wage an effective campaign to regain territory from militant groups, and lay the groundwork for an inclusive National Dialogue Conference. However, security remains a major concern; unemployment is rising; and many Yemenis lack adequate food, water, and health care.

Atlantic Council President and CEO Frederick Kempe moderates the question and answer session.
