NASA unveiled its new launch system for future deep space missions at a press conference on Capitol Hill. The new rocket, called the Space Launch System or S-L-S, will include hardware from the space shuttle and now-defunct Constellation programs.
The proposed $10 billion rocket will use a mixture of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen fuel to help cut costs. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden was joined by Senate Science Committee Ranking Member Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) and Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space Chairman Bill Nelson (D-FL).
