Rep. Barney Frank Not Running in 2012

Washington, DC
Monday, November 28, 2011

After his announcement by Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) that he will retire at the end of his term, he holds a news conference on Capitol Hill to further discuss his decision.

Speaking to Washington-based reporters, Frank said he decided not to run because the new borders of his district "would mean campaigning pretty much full time."

Speaking candidly to reporters, Frank said he is a better legislator than campaigner. He joked, "I raised an enormous amount of money, unfortunately half was for me, half was for my opponent."

Asked if he would serve as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Frank said, "I am doubtful I could be a loyal member of someone’s administration."

Frank, a ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, held a press conference in Newton, MA on Monday to formally announce his decision.  Responding to reporters about his future plans he said "Let me be clear, I will neither be a lobbyist nor a historian."

Rep. Frank won his seat in Congress in 1980.
