Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, on Payroll Tax Deal

Washington, DC
Sunday, December 25, 2011

On "Newsmakers," Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) discusses the recent deal to extend the payroll tax cut for two months. The House Republicans agreed to accept the bipartisan Senate measure - with a minor adjustment - after House rank-and-file members revolted earlier in the week.

But the debate over the payroll tax will continue after the holidays as conferees have been appointed to work out an agreement between the House and the Senate for a longer extension.

As for public opinion of Congress, Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, said he "think(s) that contrast between Republicans… zealously protecting tax breaks for special interests and folks who are wealthy" is evident to the American people.

Newsmakers airs Sunday at 10:00 am ET and again at 6:00 pm ET on C‑SPAN.
