Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens spoke at the American Law Institute annual meeting.
He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Ford in 1975 and retired in 2010. He’s the third longest serving justice in U.S. history.
Since retiring former Justice Stevens has written a book titled “Five Chiefs: A Supreme Court Memoir” which chronicles his time on Supreme Court under five chief justices.
President Obama announced in April that he will award Justice Stevens the Medal of Freedom at a ceremony later this year.
The American Law Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to "producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law," according to its website. It's membership is comprised of lawyers, law professors and judges.
