Former Sen. Rick Santorum (PA) won primaries on Tuesday in Alabama and Mississippi. Former Gov. Mitt Romney (MA) took caucuses in Hawaii and n American Samoa.
Rick Santorum told supporters at an event in Lafayette, Louisiana, "we did it again." Polls over the past week had shown a very close race between the three leading candidates, with Ron Paul a distant fourth. Santorum spends the next two days campaigning in Puerto Rico.
Newt Gingrich spoke to supporters in Birmingham, Alabama, telling them "we need a visionary leader who is prepared to talk about a dramatically better future." Newt Gingrich moves his campaign to Illinois on Wednesday.
Mitt Romney and Ron Paul did not hold events on Tuesday night.
On Saturday, Missouri’s caucuses determine delegates for the summer’s national convention and Puerto Rico holds its primary. Rounding out the contests this month are primaries in Illinois on March 20 and Louisiana on March 24.
